These bubbles can produce interesting effects such as a golden sheen (sheen obsidian) or an iridescent, rainbow-like sheen (rainbow obsidian).Īphyric rhyolitic obsidian. It may contain patterns of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow, aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing before being cooled. In some stones, the inclusion of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern (snowflake obsidian). Iron and magnesium typically give the obsidian a dark brown to black color. Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. This breakdown of obsidian is accelerated by the presence of water. The intersections of conchoidal fracture surfaces can be sharper than a razor.īecause obsidian is metastable at the Earth's surface (over time the glass becomes fine-grained mineral crystals), no obsidian has been found that is older than Cretaceous age. This smooth, curved type of fracture surface occurs because of the near-absence of mineral crystals in the glass. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic "conchoidal" fracture. The inhibition of atomic diffusion through this highly viscous and polymerized lava explains the lack of crystal growth. Obsidian is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where the chemical composition (high silica content) induces a high viscosity and polymerization degree of the lava. Because of its conchoidal fracture (smooth curved surfaces and sharp edges), the sharpest stone artifacts were fashioned from obsidian. Obsidian was used by Native Americans and many other primitive peoples for weapons, implements, tools, and ornaments and by the ancient Aztec and ancient Greek civilizations for mirrors. Other types with dark bands or mottling in gray, green, or yellow are also known. Though obsidian is typically jet-black in colour, the presence of hematite (iron oxide) produces red and brown varieties, and the inclusion of tiny gas bubbles may create a golden sheen. Obsidian has a glassy lustre and is slightly harder than window glass. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 65 to 80 %), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite. Obsidian is a igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. eGPUs bring the power of desktop gaming and workstation graphics cards to laptops and compact desktops alike. Thunderbolt 3 allowed external graphics cards, eGPUs, to become a reality. With an adapter or a dock, it’s possible to connect the Thunderbolt ports on your Mac to other devices such as a display, high-speed storage, networking, speakers, and more. For more information on what is the difference between Thunderbolt and USB-C, check out our explainer video. The Thunderbolt interface is a way of carrying USB, PCI, and DisplayPort standards together in one cable. On many models, this is the only connection type. Today, all Macs ship with Thunderbolt 3 ports for connectivity. Starting the list off with a bang is Thunderbolt 3. Macintosh Connectors Thunderbolt 3 Era Macs (2016 – Current) The outlet plug on all Apple laptop chargers is modular and universal, meaning you can use an extender or change the outlet entirely for use in another country. Similar to the adapters available today, MagSafe is available in 85W, 60W, and 45W versions. In 2012 the MagSafe port was redesigned to accommodate slimmer computers, and an adapter is available to connect MagSafe devices to MagSafe 2 Power Adapters. The MagSafe series of adapters were prone to wear and tear damage very quickly, and the shielding surrounding the adapter was prone to stripping and fraying. While this feature is dearly missed, it may have been for the best that Apple discontinued the product. Connecting a MagSafe charger produced a very satisfying *click* sound when connected. MagSafe was a much-loved, modular power solution that detached from the computer if the cable were kicked or pulled quickly. One of the great features of USB-C on Apple portables is that you can charge the device on any available USB-C port. Ideally, it would be best if you matched the correct adapter to each system when possible. If you use a 30W charger to power up the larger 16” MacBook Pro, the adapter will work, but it will take much longer. A USB-C cable is required to connect to the power adapter. At this time of writing, Apple ships three different USB-C Power Adapters: 96W for the 16” MacBook Pro, 61W for the 13” MacBook Pro, and 30W for the MacBook Air. In addition to the connection type of a charger, a charger also has a power watt rating. But note that a MacBook Air charger might take quite a while to charge a MacBook Pro fully. You can safely use a MacBook Air charger to power up a MacBook Pro. If your computer uses the same shape charging plug, it is OK to mix and match power chargers. MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro Chargers USB-C Charging Macs (2015 – Current) Read on to check out our comprehensive guide to Apple connections in use for the past two decades. And while some connectors are widely missed (such as MagSafe), others were loathed (I’m looking at you, ADC). Apple connections have traditionally offered unique features that were influential to the PC industry. Most times, ports and connectors found on the Mac lineup lived a long life, although there were a handful of embarrassing failures along the way. From the first Macintosh Plus to the new 24” iMac, Apple has used unique connections and has often strayed away from the conventions of the PC industry. When it comes to Apple cables, connectors, and interfaces, Apple has always carved its own path. Does 45 RPM Sound Better – Think of it like drawing a flipbook: If you drew the same animation on 33 and 45 pages respectively, you’d have to flip your 45-page version quicker to get the same speed animation as the 33-page version, but the changes from page-to-page would contain more detail, making the animation considerably smoother. There are quite a few technical details as to why this is the case, so for the purpose of this article, I will try to key this simple: Since 45 records travel faster than 33 RPM, more waveform definition can exist on the record surface in other words, there are more bumps and grooves created, which means better audio quality. 12-Inch LP’s mastered at 45 RPM sound better. What’s the Difference Between 33 and 45 RPM?ģ3 RPM records have always presented a compromise in sound quality, in exchange for longer playback time. Most lack dynamics, and sound thin and noisy. Sadly, most of these releases are style over function and don’t sound particularly good. More often, however, when we think of picture discs, we think of collector’s items with full-color graphics over the playback surface. In fact, they date back as far as 1900, when the Canadian Berliner Gramophone Company had the “His Master’s Voice” dog-and-gramophone trademark lightly etched into the playback surface of some seven-inch shellac records as an anti-piracy measure. The roots of picture disc records go back further than you might think. We’ve all seen those picture discs hanging on the wall in record shops. After about fifty plays, the loss in sound quality becomes noticeable. Traditionally, the material of a dubplate is much softer than pressed vinyl. These dubplates will often be unreleased recordings, exclusive versions, or remixes of existing recordings. They’re also used by drum and bass and other electronic music producers. In reggae dancehall culture, a dubplate refers to an exclusive, ‘one-off’ acetate disc recording that only some DJs have access to. (Most are 10-inch discs, but 12-inch versions are available). Very nostalgic nonetheless.Ī dubplate is a type of sample disc (referred to as an acetate disc) used in mastering studios for test recordings before proceeding with the final master, and mass-produced vinyl pressing. A tabby is any cat that has a pattern of dots, stripes, swirling or lines on their coat. Tabby is not a breed, but a term to describe a certain coat pattern in domestic cats. But did their matching coats mean they’re all the same breed? In fact, no. This is known as lentigo and it is usually harmless, but any change in pigmentation should be checked out with your veterinarian in case it is something serious. You may have met several orange and white tabby cats. Occasionally black freckles may appear on gums or lips of orange cats. There may be a white masking gene combined with orange in some cats resulting in orange and white spotted or accented cats. Should a male cat have a rare calico color, he has an extra X chromosome and is therefore sterile. A multicolored female with outstanding stripes is known as a torbie. Since female cats have two X chromosomes, they can carry both eumelanin and pheomelanin, resulting in calico and tortoise patterns. The gene that codes for orange must be on the X chromosome in each parent. The mother must be either orange, tortie or calico and the father must be orange. Basically an orange female must inherit two orange genes. Arnold Plotnik, DVM, has detailed writings annotating the science behind the complicated gene matchups. Orange tabbies are 80% male to 20% female because the color depends on what is known as a sex-linked gene. This actually changes black pigment into orange! Red or orange fur is due to dominant epistasis: one gene changes the expression of another. Eumelanin produces black and brown fur from dark to light shades and pheomelanin makes red to cream shades. So, Where Does the Red-Orange-Yellow Come From?Īll cats are either black or red and melanins decide the final color. In rare instances an almost turquoise with gold flecks has been seen. Eye color in orange cats can vary from yellow to copper to green. Various cultures have different legends which shows how much the pattern is revered throughout the world. Thence forward all tabbies have had Mary’s mark. A common legend is that a tabby cat jumped into the manger to keep baby Jesus warm and Mary stroked its forehead. Most tabbies have defined “eyeliner” around their eyes and an “M” on their foreheads. There are four tabby cat patterns: Mackerel, Classic, Striped and Ticked. Tabby cats all possess the agouti gene, which patterns the fur as tabby. Tabby is a term taken from a striped silk fabric made near Baghdad. There are many orange tabbies in books and paintings that illustrate the unique attractiveness of these cats Winston Churchill had an orange cat named Jock who attended cabinet meetings with the Prime Minister. Some famous orange cats in both story and history are Garfield, Morris, Orangey (from Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Milo (and Otis), and Spot (from Star Trek Next Generation). They can have short, medium or long hair. Every orange tabby I have ever had fits all of those descriptions. More on that in a bit.Īdmirers of orange tabbies describe them as mild-tempered, playful, gluttonous, opinionated and affectionate. All orange cats are tabbies, but not all tabbies are orange. Orange tabbies are also described as marmalade or ginger cats. They range in hue from red to pale yellow and they are prevalent in history and art. But when we put together the album, for some reason the record label just didn't think that was something they wanted to do. I just always try to put something patriotic on my albums. Songfacts: Many also assume that "Where the Stars and the Stripes and the Eagle Fly" was written in response to 9/11, but that was actually scrapped from an earlier album, right? Heck, man, if you listen to almost all Aaron Tippin songs, blue collar stuff, you know, that's my dad coming out of me, always. Tippin: Right, and my dad was my hero in life. But when you listen to it, it's about sticking to your morals and convictions in everyday life. Songfacts: Because it became associated with the Gulf War, a lot of people look at it as being a patriotic song. All we did was recall how our dads raised us, what kind of guys they were, and that's basically how we put that tune together. Tippin: Buddy Brock and I wrote that song. Songfacts: Your first Top 10 hit was "You've Got To Stand For Something." What do you remember about writing that one? Next thing you know, it said, "Here's one from a guy down South Carolina, Aaron Tippin." Bam! I went, "Wow! He played it!" We're riding away and we still had that radio station tuned in. We said, "Well, we were out trying to see if we could get a record played." He says, "Okay, I'll check it out." He slammed the door in our face, we left. Once in awhile they did, and I can remember a guy met us at the door, wouldn't even let us come in. We'd go down to the studio and we'd cut a little 45 and we'd take it around to all the local radio stations, try to get them to play it. It's way before I went to Nashville, in my honky tonk years. Songfacts: Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio? You know, Mark had that as his first single. That was on The Chase that ended up being a big crossover album. But I wasn't disappointed at all that Garth got it. Songfacts: We recently talked to Mark Collie and he was telling us about " Something With A Ring To It." He said he really wanted George Strait to record that one, and then it ended up going to Garth Brooks. We brought the song, pitched it, and he bit. Songfacts: You didn't write that specifically with him in mind, that was something you had to kind of shop around? First cut for another artist was David Ball, "I Was Born With a Broken Heart." Songfacts: And what was your first big cut for another artist? Songfacts: But it's not so simple when you actually try to do it, is it? He just always found the right words to say something, and it affected me. Tippin: Don't be complicated, don't write riddles. What lessons did you take from him in songwriting? Songfacts: You've said in many of your interviews that Hank Williams, Sr., was a major influence on you. So I consider myself a songwriter that became a singer. I started writing songs - I was already a songwriter, but I fell so in love with songwriting. Nobody even had the courtesy to call me back. But I had a videotape, so I took it around to all the record labels. I was on a show called You Can Be A Star. Do you consider yourself a songwriter first before you're a performer?Īaron Tippin: Well, the truth is I came to Nashville as a singer, and nothing happened. Amanda Flinner (Songfacts): When you first came to Nashville, you started out as a songwriter. On a brief respite from touring, he's still happy talk about his career - from his early days in Nashville to his 2015 anniversary album Aaron Tippin - 25 Years. True to his roots, Tippin was rambling through the North Georgia Mountains with his uncle en route to look at a plane when Songfacts caught up with him. His résumé supplied the building blocks for his working class anthems, but he also showed a tender side with the hit ballads "My Blue Angel" and "That's As Close As I'll Get To Loving You." When he wasn't on stage performing at local bars, he was earning his own ''Working Man's Ph.D.'' as a trucker, welder, mechanic, and airplane pilot. Tippin's brand of blue collar pride and unwavering patriotism was instilled during his upbringing on a South Carolina farm. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Tippin had another patriotic hit with "Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly" and started an annual tradition of entertaining US troops stationed around the world. His first Top 10 hit, "You've Got To Stand For Something," struck a chord with soldiers fighting in the Gulf War and earned the singer an invitation to join Bob Hope's famed USO tour. As a songwriter at Acuff-Rose Music, he penned songs for The Kingsmen, Charley Pride, David Ball, and Garth Brooks before landing his own recording contract at RCA Nashville in 1990.
